Hi once again, and welcome to the month of June. June is the month with the longest daylight hours of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. June’s Birthstone is the pearl and the flower is the rose (also the national flower of England). Believed to be named after the Roman goddess Juno patroness of marriage and the welfare of women. The 5th of June is World Environment Day, and the 20th is the Northern Hemisphere’s summer solstice and is also Father’s Day. Midsummer Day falls on the 24th of June.
‘Flaming June’, ‘June is busting out all over’. It is summer at last. An ideal way of enjoying some relaxing time is a visit to the local beer garden to enjoy a social pint or a glass of wine with friends. If you’re a fan of Tennis, you won’t want to miss Wimbledon fortnight starting on the 27th of June.
Better still, if you’re a book lover, why not combine your favourite pastime with a holiday or just a long weekend in the ‘book town’ of Hay-on-Wye on the Welsh-English border. It is host to a chain of independent book shops. The Book Festival is held during the early part of June when the population increases from 1,500 to almost half a million, attracting sketch artists, authors, and book lovers among the visitors. There are plenty of food stalls serving fresh food. Live performances are held during the evening (where a small charge is made) but the festival is free. While talking about books. Did you know that Shakespeare wrote A Midsummer Night’s Dream, with midsummer being June? Happy reading one and all.
B.W.
