March is named after the Roman god of war and was originally the first month in the early (ten-month) Roman calendar. It is a ‘special’ month as the 3rd celebrates World Book Day created by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) in 1995. It is also the month that starts ‘Daylight Saving Time’ — ‘Leap into Spring’ and the beginning of warmer weather.
Being host to World Book Day reminds us of the importance of reading. For many people, reading is a way of life. However, we all have different tastes. Some of us like to read about our favourite celebrities or learn about ancient history, whereas others may like fictional books — horror stories, thrillers, crime or how about some romance? Whatever your taste in reading, much pleasure can be had by reading just one book. Imagine what one book a week can deliver.
There are many ways to enjoy World Book Day. One way is to encourage others to read or an adult reading to a child while at the same time teaching them how to read. As well as being host to World Book Day and British summertime, March the 8th is International Women’s Day. Once again, happy reading to one and all.
