Often
referred to as the ‘gorgeous month’, the weather is warming, the birds are
singing and the garden has come to life. May acts as a bridge between spring
and summer. It is thought to be named after the Roman goddess Maia — keeper of
the plants. However, some believe May could be from the Latin word meaning
elders. The 1st of May is May Day (no relation to the distress call). It is
also the time of the year to try some new recipes with the first new crops of
the year — asparagus and spinach. Try asparagus fritters or spinach lasagna.
May is also one of the most popular months for weddings bells to be ringing.
Hopefully, the weather will be sunny but not too hot or humid. The birth flower
for the month of May is the lily-of-the-valley, so if you are getting married,
maybe you should include some in your bouquet. May is also the start of many
outdoor activities such as camping, the first BBQ, and water sports.
On the fun side, May is also known as the ‘Get caught reading’ month, so why
not join me and give it a try with ‘Sail Away’ by yours truly?
Happy reading, one and all.
B.W.
