THE PLEASURE OF READING

Having spent a large part of my working life at sea, I found I had quite a lot of spare time on my hands. Visits to the theatre or cinema were obviously not possible, in fact I could do none of the things one could normally do if living on dry land. This meant hobbies were limited.
I found a pleasant way to pass at least some of the time was to take up reading. I was not only able to read as a means of learning but also for pleasure. Books in the ships library’s were limited, so when on leave I devoted some of my time to looking for books to take back on board at the end of my leave. It was not long before I was reading on average, one book a week. On occasions when in a foreign port, there was a chance to visit the local bookstore, quite an experience in its self.
It was not long before I felt the need to attempt to write a story myself. So between spells of reading, I wrote a short story and while doing so I discovered that there was a lot to learn about writing a novel.
So, with the winter now upon us, restrictions on travel and advice from the government to stay at home as much as possible, there is no better time than now to read a book – or two.
SAIL AWAY is the first in a series featuring Brian Ridley.
